On Monday and Tuesday, I came in to do some further editing at lunch. Overall, it has been going really well and we have now reached a point where we are virtually finished. One of the main things I was working on though was the ending, as we have at least three possible shots, which I really like, that we could end on. Below you can see my first experimenting with alternating shots in the climax (which I talked about here), although we have since edited this further as there were too many shots of Poppy in the red dress. Because of this, I came up with several alternate endings.
Since we began editing, I was set on us having the video end on the projection shot which shows 'HOWL' written (twice) in red letters against a black background. However, this isn't very clear, as the letters are obscured due to being projected on Poppy's face (see below). Therefore, I started looking through our other base tracks for alternatives.
The second possible ending is another projection shot, this time showing Poppy opening her eyes just as the projection switches to black, which you can see below.
Finally, the sideways shot of Poppy covered in fairy lights was one that stood out, as some of the lights were unplugged once the base track was finished whilst the camera still recorded. This meant that in a split second only one set of fairy lights were on. This, coupled with the switch to a black screen to signal the end of the video, gives the illusion that these lights turn off too. When I showed this to my group, we were really enthusiastic about it as it brings the video to a nice close, so we decided to definitely stick with this one!
Yesterday, Poppy and I came in and perfected the editing even more. We particularly worked on the ending until we were satisfied with it, and it now differs quite substantially to the preview above. We also adjusted the colour of many of the daylight forest shots so that they matched those at the beginning (on which we had experimented on as a group in Tuesday's lesson). In addition, we went through all of our footage again and identified a few shots that we hadn't used yet, including a few where we filmed Poppy holding a sparkler. We cut some of these into the climax, as Poppy thought it would be a good idea to introduce new shots here that we hadn't used earlier in the video. I think these quick glimpses work really well and will hopefully give the viewer a couple of last minute surprises to ultimately leave a lasting impression.
I also found what I believe was the first video projection test shot that we filmed, and we cut a bit of this into the lead up to the first chorus. This was preceded by a portion of the first half-speed recording that Poppy attempted, which we then sped up to create the abnormally fast body movements (when she sings "drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart"). We decided to add these clips as we felt we needed a few more shots that didn't run the whole way through the video as base tracks. These additions can be seen in the video below which I quickly filmed with my phone.
So yes, I believe that by tomorrow (or should I say later today since it's past midnight) we will be officially finished, one day before the deadline! To celebrate, here is a bonus video filmed by the ever amazing Charon!
